Chirping sound in AirPods Pro when using as hearing aids

I get a chirping sound on the left side of my AirPods Pro when using them as hearing aids. The hearing aid function otherwise works well but the chirping sound is annoying. It is not constant, more random a few times a minute. I took it to an Apple tech and they sent my pods to Apple. I got them back within a week and the tech notes state: “Our technicians successfully repaired your product. They ran complete diagnostic tests, performed all available troubleshooting, and replaced the following parts: Item Number 661-35408, AirPods Pro 2nd gen USB-C Left, ROR.” But nothing changed and the chirping is still there. I am wondering if anyone else has this issue and if it can be fixed or if it is just something I’ll have to live with.

It’s feedback because the tips are not sealing well enough in your ears., even if the tip fit test passes. Try different tip sizes and see if that helps or consider 3rd party foam tips.

Almost every one that owns the pro's gen 2 has the problem. I have researched and researched this mysterious chirping in the left airpod sense I got them. I have hearing problems and I have congestion hearing problems so to hear this chirping in my left ear is annoying. I have tried every variation of control settings there possibly is to solve the issue. The only fix or solution I came up with is that I only get the chirping when my volume is above 70 db's. I use live listen a lot when the congestion clogs up my ears to hear conversation when I cannot hear normally so I at times increase the volume to 80 to 100 % to hear what is being said to me but on that token I have to turn off all airpod pro controls just to be able to hear the conversation. It's been a real challenge with the use of these AirPods and they are great but you pretty much have to be an IT tech to use them. Just saying.

Hi Dan Bryant1,

Re: "Chirping sound in AirPods Pro when using as hearing aids. The hearing aid function otherwise works well but the chirping sound is annoying. It is not constant, more random a few times a minute."

Wondering whether this happens only in certain circumstances eg: when streaming audio, or when not.

It may be related to what you are doing, eg: an app (or Live Listen ?) / or where you are situated ... eg: in a certain room, or outside / or maybe it happens in transparency mode or when noise control is off (or on).

Is there any time at all when the chirping is not evident for longer periods, while wearing the AirPods Pro ?

Else: Some kind of feedback ? Could there be some sort of interference ... or environmental effect (eg: AirPods too close to ... microwave?) ... either with the airpods, or could it be related to the device or computer your use them with?

Commiserations! You have been through quite a lot already, to be still dealing with the same issue:

You may want to check, or adjust, the left / right balance slider, or just slide it back and forth a couple of times.

Re: "I am wondering if anyone else has this issue ... "

It is early days with the new hearing-aid features, and features are still still being introduced in countries where approvals were late. Unless someone with a similar issue replies here; as Apple-users, like yourself, likely no-one here would know whether or not others have a similar situation. We have no access to feedback sent to Apple.

There are some customizations you might want to experiment with, to see whether there is any improvement.

Maybe fine-tuning, or experimenting with a few settings, could prove helpful

You can use mono audio, adjust left-right stereo balance, amplify soft sounds and adjust certain frequencies to best suit your hearing needs.

If necessary, you can adjust controls on the AirPods Pro themslves, so the left one is used differently.

Pause, skip, and adjust volume with your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Change the double-tap function for each AirPod (AirPods 1 or 2)

You can set each AirPod to do one of these when you double-tap it:

  • Use Siri*
  • Play and pause your audio content
  • Skip forward
  • Go back to the previous track

You can: Choose what you want each AirPod to do when you double-tap it.

Re: feedback

You might want to send feedback to Apple, and to let them know, if nothing above has helped.

After a month of analyzing the different scenarios of settings with my airpod pro 2nd gen I have confirmed that the high pitch chirp sound is not random nor is it accidental. It happens every 20 seconds in transparency mode with hearing aid function enabled. The only setting where you don't get the "chirp" while in transparency mode is with amplification off (or lowest setting) and ambient noise reduction at 100% while in hearing aid mode. I can only conclude that the "chirp" serves as some kind of an alert or notification for the iPod pro 2nd gen. Else it is feedback warning between the speaker and the mic built in to the pods. I guess someone will have to hire a sound engineer to try to determine this phenomenon with either the software or the hardware of the mysterious chirping of the iPod pro's 2nd gen's.

Knock on wood, but my chirping has stopped. I had previously discovered that it only happened when I had either adaptive or transparency selected. No chirping when I selected noise cancellation or had noise control off. This morning I decided to do some more testing to see if I could find any other correlation and for some odd reason I don't hear any chirping. I don't recall changing any setting. I am wondering if maybe there was a software update that fixed it and I just now discovered it. Anyone else notice?

Thank you brbo. But chirping tone is all together different than a whistling noise. We have done the fit test and adjustments, that goes without saying. I know mine fit perfectly because not only does the test say it’s prefect but when I test them in noise cancellation mode, I get zero ( 0 ) sound. The software and hardware are working perfect. All the information and user guides offered by Apple, forums and other sources have been carefully examined and all suggestions and adjustments have been tested. What those of us that are using the hearing aid mode want to know is why there is a high pitch chirping tone alert on our AirPod pro 2nd gen is and what we need to know to make it stop because it is annoying.
