i want to switch my maps back to gulf of mexico
I don’t want my map showing this farce of gulf of America. I’d like it to show the correct name, Gulf of Mexico. I’d like to change it back?

It’s not actually even the middle; the US “owns” less than half of the gulf; about 45%. The balance is divided between Mexico and Cuba (and a couple of small countries).
In the government's defence, the executive order clearly describes this, "rename as the “Gulf of America” the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico."
This next sentence is interesting too, "The Secretary shall subsequently update the GNIS to reflect the renaming of the Gulf and remove all references to the Gulf of Mexico from the GNIS, consistent with applicable law."
You can lookup these features on the GNIS. This is clearly a US-centric database. It ignores the rest of the world. When I search for "Bay of Fundy", I get a result that is most definitely NOT the Bay of Fundy.
But of all the ultimate ironies here, if you check the actual continental shelf on the US government's own Continental Shelf project and compare that to the actual label position of "Gulf of America" on both Google Maps and Apple Maps, you can see that both Google and Apple have done it wrong. They are both labelling the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. By that I mean the actual label position is just outside of the boundary of the Gulf of America.
But of course, everyone is trying to make a political point by virtue signalling how much they don't like President Trump. That's a total waste of time. Anyone who has actually read the executive order, and can read a map, can make a strong geographic point that both Google and Apple have labelled the map incorrectly. Now this is not the Google Support Community, so I don't care about Google. How should it look in Apple Maps?
Well, we can start by looking at how the US government itself labels the map. Don't bother checking the GNIS. They have a note stating they haven't fixed it yet. But we can check that State Department site above. This is what their map looks like:
This is correct, folks! For all the trash talk of the US government, they actually can read their own laws and a map. Go figure.
But Apple needs our help. We can overlay the correct government map on top of Apple Maps to see the problem:
This is how it should be labelled on Apple Maps:
(This is just an example. My labels aren't correct either but I'm constrained by transparency and other labels. But this is the right idea.)
If anyone wants to file a bug report citing this correct geographical information, you have my full support.

Me too! I tried to dump the app and just use WAZE and HERE WE GO, but Apple works with my car. How can we make Apple see that we think this is STUPIDITY!?!?!? How about the price of eggs huh?
Apple does not control the price of eggs. For both complaints, contact your Congressional Representatives, they not only have the power to change the USGS database where both Apple and Google gets their map information, but are also responsible to representing your interests. You are also responsible for choosing the Representative that best reflects your views. Are they working for you and doing what you expect them to be doing?
I just reported it as an issue on Apple Maps. The only way I could submit a report was to click on "something else".
Yep… In order to fix this then your location must be changed to somewhere that is not in the U.S.A

MapQuest still calls it "Gulf of Mexico".
And I care...why? I don't use MapQuest. And, in the large picture of current affairs, this is all very un-important.

To the best of my knowledge, Apple has in fact only changed it for people whose region is set to USA.
In Canada it is "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)"

The name has been change to Gulf of America, for American side.
You can take it up with POTUS.

It isn't unusual for countries to have their own place names on the map.

What kind of answer is this? Why did Apple change the name of the Gulf of Mexico?
Maybe I can say from now on we change the name for Apple in to Pear.
What kind of analogy is that?
If you don't like the name change which his only for America, you can simply packed up your belongings, move to Mexico change your phone region to Mexico and then you can have your gulf of Mexico on your map.

You are certainly free to do that. People who disagree with you are also free to ignore it. Something to consider.
How silly no one is moving to Mexico because we have a loon running the show. My question was legit in why can’t we as users change it back to how we prefer it? The correct terminology the rest of the world is using!
The name is not incorrect. The USGS (United States Geological Survey) has changed the name from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Google Maps has changed the name also. The USGS changed the name to comply with the president’s executive order. Apple and Google had no choice but to also comply or face huge fines, just like they complied with the TikTok ban. You can be sure that Apple consulted its army of lawyers before doing this and were told they had to comply. So until it is rescinded or a lawsuit is filed challenging the presidential executive order the name change will stick. This only applies to U.S. maps. The rest of the world can keep calling it the Gulf of Mexico.

That is correct. Just like with the weather app, Apple is not a meteorologist and actually predicting the weather, they simply rely on the data available for the service and Apple's speciality is the UI for displaying that data. What you see is from the database used and for US customers using maps, that datasource is the USGS.
Yes can we please go back to the name that had been in place from multiple countries, cultures, and peoples for more than four hundred years to be “The Gulf of Mexico”! Apple is doing humanity a disservice by siding with one man’s opinion.
