In that case, once you install iTunes you should be able to see the iPod in iTunes. Windows will not see the iPod.

You can add any music that you own, to iTunes in order to create your library. However, there are some caveats concerning what you can do with iTunes that will still work on an iPod Classic:

• • I recommend that you do not install Apple Music (the app), Apple TV or Apple Devices as they prevent you adding and seeing your music in your Library
  • do not subscribe to Apple Music (the subscription service that gives subscribers access to Apple's music library) as this music cannot be added to an iPod Classic

You can add music to your iTunes Library by:

• • using iTunes to copy a CD (compact disc) into your Library
  • buying music from the iTunes Store (which should automatically download into your Library)
  • buying music from other online sources, such as Amazon or Bandcamp, etc. (in this case, you manually download the music and then use the iTunes menu command File/Add Folder to Library*)
  • obtaining music from artist websites (either purchased or given away for free), downloading it to your computer and then using File/Add Folder to Library*

* In both cases above, there is also a menu option to File/Add File to Library, used when you have just one song to add to your library.

Once you have music in your library, you can use iTunes' Sync (synchronise) procedure to add the music to your iPod.

The above is a very brief outline of the steps required to add music to an iPod. Post back if and when you need any help with any of those steps.

If you're using a Mac, the Finder application will manage your iPod instead of iTunes.
