Extreme Battery Drain After iOS 18.3.1 Update on iPhone 12

Since updating my iPhone 12 to iOS 18.3.1 a week ago, it has been experiencing extreme battery drain, noticeably overnight when the phone is not in use. Before the update, battery life was completely fine. Battery health is 89%.

I tried these troubleshooting steps that I found on here:

- Restarting, multiple times

- Checking Battery Usage in Settings (nothing unusual)

- Ensured that no apps are open overnight

- Disabling Background App Refresh

-Checked that Location Services for unnecessary apps is off

- Checked that Always-On Display is off

- Checking for rogue apps or unusual battery drain in the Battery section

- Checked that no unnecessary widgets or Live Activities are running

- Checked that Optimised Battery Charging is enabled

- Turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi overnight to see if it makes a difference

Despite all this, the battery continues to drain really fast compared to before the update (the second screenshot was last night).

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any other solutions before I consider a full reset?

Thanks in advance!

I’ve got the same problem with my 12 Pro. I’ve always escaped the battery drain issues that occur after most iOS Updates but this one I have not. I’m losing battery massively. Just logging in to this page and writing this post is causing noticeable loss. Like yourself I have gone through every setting. Every app. Nothing is on that would drain. I’ve always been very conscious of background activity since I became an Apple user way back with the 3GS and never had problems. Until this update.

You are basing my usage on that of someone hammering their phone. I’ve not made a phone call on my phone for nearly two years. I use my iPad for most things. Either way, even if I absolutely murdered my iPhone doesn’t change the fact that up until iOS 18.3.2 my battery was draining normally and then after the update it’s noticeably bad.

Haven’t found a solution. I’ve tried everything except what you are doing, rolling back. I go to sleep with 99% battery on 2 iPhones. No background or location activity, apps closed, Bluetooth off, even WiFi off, apps up to date, battery health fine, yada yada yada. And I wake to 2 dead iPhones. Just hoping for a better update soon

Why don’t you charge your iPhones overnight?

No, I'm basing my recommendations on how old your phone is, the reported capacity, and my understanding of how that reporting works.

What's the point of asking questions here if you are going to reject every suggestion people make? If what you want is for someone to say, "Yes, iOS has a known issue where it causes excessive battery drain," that's not going to happen because it just isn't true.

If you want to actually resolve the problem, consider taking people's suggestions.

Yes…after the latest 18.3 update my iPhone and ipad will not charge rapidly and stops due to battery temps. This is insane! Just spent over $2k for my iPhone 16 Pro and accessories for charging, ipad etc. These updates are becoming useless. So frustrating!

It’s normal for your device to warm up a bit while charging. Are you using a 20W adapter, that you expect rapid charging to occur?

Ditto. Settings are set to reduce background app updates, auto updates off and location services select only a few like emergency, weather, etc. the latest update has drained batteries over night like you said. So frustrating and hoping those Apple coders get it corrected soon. Technology is supposed to be working for us and not us working for it. Crazy!!!

Did you find any solution? Did the 18.3.2 fix the problem? so the replacement was needed ... still in repair shop. They told me they were able to downgrade the ios to 18.3.2 but I am dubious now and maybe I should ask them to downgrade even further to 18.3.0 or something?

Who downgraded your iOS? Did they remove a Beta Version? Because there’s no newer iOS version than iOS 18.3.2. You cannot downgrade your software version.

In my opinion and after speaking with tech support, it’s all in the update coding. Who knows but it is unacceptable for sure. So sad to see Apple diminishing quality control. I too did everything recommended and did a reset on both iPhone and iPad only to end up having to go back and re-apply previous settings. Apple is aware.. ughhh…
