The iPad Air M2 does not have a lighting port. It has a USB-C port. Lighting devices will not work with it.
What exact model of Sandisk Usb do you have?
Are you using an adapter to plug it in to the iPad?
Where on the iPad are you looking for the drive exactly?
It should appear in the Files App, under Locations.
How is the flash drive formatted? The iPad supports Windows Fat32 & exFat, and Apple's HFS+ and APFS formats.
It will not access a Windows NTFS formatted drive.
If the flash drive has both a USB-C and Lightning connector, you need to use the USB-C connector.
Lightning Sandisk flash Drive: (will not work in a M2 iPad Air without an adapter).
USB-C Sandsik Flash Drive (will work on an M2 iPad Air)

You are correct, that it doesn’t have use the lightening adapter, rather the USB Type-A and USB Type-C
Then you'll need to use the USB-C side, plug it in to the iPad and if formatted in a way the iPad understands, it should as mentioned, appear in the Files app in the side bar under Locations.
Does it not show up there?
Does it mention on the box how it's formatted?

If you are using a Magic Keyboard, you must plug it into the iPad's port, not the keyboard's charging port.
I purchased the Dual Drive Go USB Type-C 512 GB for PC/Mac iPad Pro
