Regarding RAT Viruses on iPhone

I fell for a screamer link while browsing on my iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 17.2.1. The link apparently had a RAT inside ( XWorm to be precise). What should i do? Should i be scared?

Ignore it. That malware only affects Windows.

For reference, a trojan isn't a virus.

SravanKrA: In this case, the 'RAT' term refers to Remote Access Trojan.

KiltedTim: Someone going to that link on Windows could get exposed to an actual threat, not just a scam.

In cellular services, RAT stands for Radio Access Technology. It refers to the type of network technology your iPhone is using to connect to a mobile network, such as:

  • GSM (2G)
  • UMTS (3G)
  • LTE (4G)
  • NR (5G, New Radio)

On an iPhone, you can see the RAT in use by going to:

Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data (this will show options like LTE, 5G Auto, 5G On, etc.).

If you're using Field Test Mode (*3001#12345#* → Dial → Swipe down for 'Serving Cell Info'), you can also check the current RAT in more detail.

Understand RAT concerning Cellular Networks.

  • Cellular networks use different Radio Access Technologies (RATs) for communication. Common RATs include GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), LTE (Long-Term Evolution), and 5G NR (New Radio).
  • Each RAT represents a different generation or technology level in mobile communication.
  • Network retention usually refers to a device's ability to maintain a connection to a specific network (e.g., GSM, CDMA, LTE) while moving between different areas or cells.

You may have checked the current LTE band/5G/4G/3G by dialing *3001#12345#* and pressing the call button and then selecting the Serving cell info option and then looked at MISC

See the pic below which is self-explanatory
