So this was a brand new Mac or a used Mac...?
If new than you had to set the Firmware password.
What is a firmware password on Mac? - Apple Support

From the Terminal.app check for Firmware password set..(?)
sudo firmwarepasswd -check
allows you to verify you have the correct password (without rebooting).
sudo firmwarepasswd -verify
(note: your psswd will not echo on screen type it in anyway, use the enter\return key to proceed.)
there is no other work-a-round if you do not have the proof of purchase.
The whole idea is to prevent unauthorized access to the Mac
ref:If you can't remember your firmware password, schedule an in-person service appointment with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider ( Find Locations )
Bring your Mac to the appointment, and bring your original receipt or invoice as proof of purchase.
