Apple TV remote no longer working with TV

overnight my Apple TV remote stopped working the TV. It no longer turns it on / off and I cannot adjust the volume any more.

I have checked all the setting on both the TV and AppleTV as well as rebooting the remote. Nothing works

if it was me then I would turn hdmi-cec off on both tv and appletv box pull the plug on both of them and let them start up and then turn on hdmi-cec on on both devices once more to see if it resolved it
