Why is the DNS System using over 3 GB on my iPhone 15 Pro Max?

I can’t edit this but it shows up in different apps in the System area.

On an iPhone (or any device), DNS (Domain Name System) is like a phonebook for the internet. When you type a website address (like apple.com), your phone doesn’t know the IP address right away — it asks a DNS server to translate that friendly web address into the right IP address so it can fetch the site.

Here’s where the data usage comes in:

  1. DNS queries themselves are small — usually just a few kilobytes per lookup.
  2. Frequent lookups add up — if your device makes a lot of requests, especially over mobile data, those tiny lookups accumulate over time.
  3. Caching helps reduce this. iPhones cache DNS responses to avoid asking for the same address repeatedly, saving data and speeding up browsing.
  4. Why it sometimes looks like large data usage:
    1. If you’re connecting to many different domains (like apps pulling ads, analytics, or APIs), there’s more DNS traffic.
    2. Using VPNs or private relays can also increase DNS requests.

In most cases, though, DNS data usage stays small — a few MBs per month — unless there’s something unusual like a misbehaving app or constant new lookups.
