More Photos in iCloud library than in folders in albums

My photos library has all the photos I have taken, some 8000 or so, yet if you look at a particular folder for example photos from a particular holiday there are photos missing from this folder. There are all the photos from that particular holiday in the library but fewer showing in the actual folder itself.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Did you put all 30 pictures in that album? and 20 left on their own?

Or are you talking about one of those view things that Apple provides, like Trips or Memories? Those are cute things Apple provides as a gift--you enjoy them or not, but you can't expect too much. Apple tries to collect pictures you will like and exclude ones that aren't so special-- but Artificial Intelligence is not really intelligent. It thinks you like pictures of people, for instance, so there will probably be more people pictures in a Memory than landscapes, even if to us the landscape was the best part. As with any gift, you politely take it, say Thanks, and after you're through with it you put it away where it doesn't bother you any more.

I use some of these things to remind me to go back to look at Thanksgiving 2017, for instance, and collect the best pictures and put them in an album that has what we want in it. It's the albums that we make for ourselves that are special.

I'm confused about your use of "Folders" and "Albums."

All pictures are viewable in Library.

Pictures go in Albums.

Albums can go in Folders. Folders can hold other folders. Folders don't hold loose pictures.

It sounds like you have created an album called "Thanksgiving 2017" (for instance,) and you put all the pictures from that holiday in that album. But now you don't see them there? Is that right?

Have you tried making a Smart Album (using my made-up example of Thanksgiving 2017) like this?

I did a range of dates, because I didn't want to lookup the date for Thanksgiving 2017.

Anyway-- do I understand what you're asking?

Yes, thank you for your reply. I understand your meaning of albums. So I have many albums of my holidays. For example one of these albums will have say 10 photos in it but if I look for that holiday in the library it has all the photos I took, say 30 photos. I am not sure why this is. I will investigate the use of a smart album. I can see how this would organise my photos but I have over 8000 photos and many holidays and walks from the last 20 years or so. So it may take some time!

It just seems odd to me that my photos from each holiday are present in the library but a reduced number are present in each holiday album.

As you say you create your own albums so you can look back and they are special to you. Initially after each holiday I put all the photos in that album suitably labelled with the holiday destination and the dates of the holiday. So, for example I put all 30 photos in there.

Having recently put all my photos onto iCloud, I noticed that whilst all 30 were in the library, the number of photos in the holiday album were reduced. Before I used iCloud I had had them in Photos app on the mac with the same count in the library as in a holiday album for example.
