If I join an iCloud family plan, will I lose the photos in my current individual plan? or how do I transfer the photos in my current individual plan to the new Family plan.

No. Nothing should be lost.
You don't have to transfer anything anywhere. Your account remains yours and will continue to have all its content including photos. You are only sharing the storage for it.
Don't log in with another Apple account on your devices. Sharing is done directly to your account.
And, no, your data will not get mixed up with other family member's data. It remains separate and private.
