iPhone 16 compatibility with Cochlear BAHA Smart App and Maxi 6

I recently purchased an iPhone 16 Pro and then discovered it is not compatible with the BAHA Smart App and my BAHA Maxi 6 hearing aid. I have contacted Cochlear and they advise it has not been tested for compatibility with the iPhone 16. Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

I would have thought Bluetooth compatibility with hearing devices would be important enough to be addressed before a new iPhone is released?

Am no expert in this area, yet your questions deserve some response. Seems it is generally compatibility with iPhones in general, and with the iOS version that is of most importance.

Apple Support publishes a list of a great many hearing devices whose manufacturer's have "Made for iPhone" compatible models: List of Made for iPhone hearing devices - Apple Support

Eg: Cochlear models listed include:

  • Baha 5
  • Baha 5 Power
  • Baha 5 SuperPower
  • Baha 6 Max Sound Processor
  • Kanso 2 Sound Processor
  • Nucleus 7 Sound Processor

System requirements for MFi hearing devices are listed at the bottom of the above article:

Eg: For iPhone: Above devices require iPhone 4 or later.

It seems hearing device manufacturers will generally make a firmware (or app) update available, to keep their Mfi hearing-devices compatible with recent iOS versions, soon after a new iOS version is released.

Cochlear's support website, your hearing professional, or a manual that came with your hearing device, may have more info., on firmware, and on keeping your model up-to-date and compatible. Of course, some devices may be manufactured only with Android phones in mind. It is generally a good idea to check the suitability to your personal needs, of any manufacturer's technical item before purchase.

Unless some-one with a similar situation sees your post, and replies to you here, as Apple=users, like yourself, we have no way of knowing for sure. Feedback and support issues made to Apple are logged by Apple, and we have no access to those details.

___________

If all else fails: Wondering if just connecting via bluetooth may be worth a try:

Seems some hearing-devices that have not been created as Mfi compatible, can be connected using bluetooth, and controlled by an app, yet some devices can not even be connected with iPhone.

Thank you. Just to clarify I am able to connect via bluetooth however I am unable to establish a secure connection with the Baha Smart App which lets me adjust settings according to the environment. I have contacted Cochlear several times and their response is very guarded:

Direct streaming or Cochlear apps may work if your device meets certain Bluetooth requirements and the relevant functionality is enabled by the manufacturer and service carrier, however Cochlear cannot guarantee that direct streaming to devices or Cochlear apps will function as intended.

Cochlear are continuously reviewing and testing new devices and operating systems as they become available. If your device is not on this list but uses Android 6.0 and Bluetooth® 4.0, the Nucleus Smart App may still work, but we are not able to offer the same level of support in troubleshooting scenarios. We are unable to provide timelines on testing.
