Are AirTags effective for motorbike theft prevention?

I had a motorbike stolen in January and am getting a new one soon. I have got several security devices for the new one, an air tag being one of them. If they can be so easily detected by other iPhones is it really worth having it?

The best device to use to help with stolen vehicles has two main characteristics:

  1. It uses GPS technology, and
  2. It can be hidden.

The Apple AirTags, or any brand Bluetooth tags, do not meet this first one, and this is critical to being able to track your property should it get stolen again.

The AirTag are NOT designed for being anti-theft devices. They work best to help you locate a missing stationary object, like car keys. If the thief has an Apple or Android phone with them, they will be immediately notified that an AirTag is "following" them. They then could easily locate the tag by forcing it to make a sound. Once the do find it, they can dispose of it. Making basically useless for this purpose.

Since you are deploying multiple devices, it won't hurt to use an AirTag, but it won't really help much either.

No problem at all. It’s also true that Apple AirTags are not designed to be Anti-Theft-devices, yet we should note that, for not being designed for something, they can be very useful at it, as multiple cases have shown. Additionally, yes, GPS would certainly improve coverage, but as long as the thief won’t store your motorbike hours away from civilization, especially in USA where iPhones are quite common, AirTags can be very quick and exact. As long as you don’t rely solely on those, they will only improve your chances of getting the bike back. Hope it was helpful.

edit: you also should make sure that your AirTag is properly attached to your bike. Of course it won’t help if the thief can just take it and throw it away.

I believe that it won’t be bad to have an AirTag on it in any case. Even if it gets detected, the thief would need time to remove it, which he won’t do 500 meters away on the sidewalk. So, you’d probably be able to track down the thief and with him the bike at least some distance, which always may help prosecuting institutions or yourself.
