What can I do if I can't hear calls on my iPhone SE?

I have an iPhone SE running IOS 18.3.1 - phone says it is upto date.

When I make a call, it is very hard to hear the other phones ring tone. I have tried everything I can think of and searched the web for solutions but to no avail.

What is the solution??
