Getting notifications that my iPhone is tracked by an unknown AirPods

Good afternoon, everyone! I'd like to ask a question:

I've received numerous times notifications, claim that my phone is been tracked by an Airpods, that niether belong to me nor to anyone I know. Furthermore I have never connected to them. Has anyone come across this situation or probably know how to comprehend with that?

Ok, I just wanted to be sure.

Yes, your iPhone can notify you if an unknown set of AirPods is moving with you. Apple has built-in anti-stalking features for AirPods, similar to AirTags, to prevent unauthorized tracking.

Basically, this is how it works:

  • If an AirPod (AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max) that does not belong to you is detected traveling with you for an extended period, your iPhone will send you an "Unknown Accessory Detected" alert.
  • You can tap on the alert to see more details, such as when it was first detected and if it is still nearby.
  • The Find My app can also guide you to play a sound to help you locate the AirPods.

... but, can the AirPods be used to actually track you? Not so much.

  • Unlike AirTags, AirPods do not have Precision Finding (unless they belong to you and are linked to your Apple Account).
  • If someone tries to use AirPods to track you, they lose visibility of the location as soon as they are out of Bluetooth range or if the AirPods’ battery dies.
  • Apple’s system ensures that unknown AirPods cannot secretly track someone without their knowledge.

If you are still concerned, here is what you can do if you get an alert:

  1. Tap on the Notification: This will open the Find My app and show you details.
  2. Play a Sound: If the AirPods are nearby, you can make them emit a sound to locate them.
  3. Check for Ownership: If they were left behind by someone, you might find a way to return them if their owner placed them in Lost Mode and provide their contact information. You would see if your iPhone is within Bluetooth range of the AirPod.
