How to recover a stolen iPhone when 'Find My' is offline?

Dear Apple Community,

I am seeking assistance regarding my stolen iPhone, which has been offline for several days. Despite my efforts, I have been unable to locate it using the "Find My" feature. Here are the steps I have taken so far:

  1. Activated "Lost Mode" via "Find My": I promptly enabled "Lost Mode" to lock the device and display a contact message.
  2. Reported the loss to local law enforcement: I filed a report with the police, providing them with the device's IMEI number for tracking purposes.
  3. Contacted my mobile carrier: I informed my carrier about the situation, and they have flagged the device as lost/stolen.
  4. Monitored "Find My" for updates: I have been regularly checking the "Find My" app for any signs of the device coming online or updating its location.
  5. Enabled "Notify When Found": I have set up notifications to alert me if the device is located.

Despite these measures, the device remains offline, and I have not received any updates on its location. I am reaching out to the community for any additional advice or suggestions that might assist in recovering my iPhone.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Offline is displayed when one or more of the following are true on the iPhone:

  • The battery has run down
  • The phone has been powered off
  • The phone does not have an Internet connection where it is currently located

iPhone thieves are also very fond of wrapping a stolen phone in aluminum foil to prevent the phone from either sending or receiving a signal. So, essentially the same as no Internet connection.

Unfortunately, there is nothing that you or we can do to control this. All that you can do is keep checking a few times each day to see if the status of the phone has changed.

I'm sorry, but frankly the chances of ever recovering a stolen phone are at best a tiny fraction above zero.

Chances are, even if you see a location, you will never get your iPhone back.

Pretty much the best that you can do is to mark it as Lost and/or have the carriers blacklist it, and try it make it as worthless to the thieves as possible. The less "easy loot" there is in iPhone theft, the less motivation the thieves have to steal phones in the first place.

A similar approach worked to cut down on car stereo theft, even though it didn't get back the stereos which were stolen.
