Converting png to jpg makes the transparency black instead of white

Hi,

I have a workflow where I resize the canvas on images using Preview. This first converts the image to png (or tif in some cases). After resizing I export it to jpg. Up until recently the transparent sections on the png became white after the export. But for some reason they have now started to be black instead. Is there anyway to change this in a setting? I have tried googling this like crazy but can't find an answer.

As you know, there's no transparency in jpgs. When you save as a jpg, the transparent section fills with the background color, set with the color selection tools in the editor you're using. So you can set that to what you like.

Hi Richard,

Yes I have tried to adjust the background color in Preview (via Settings/Window background Color) but it still just set it as black when I make an export to jpg. Or is there a setting I am missing in Preview?

Drat! I was playing in GraphicConverter, since I'm used to that. But I don't get the same background concept in Preview. I was thinking of the color settings

for objects, but these seem to control only the fills and edges. I'm flummoxed.
