How do I add page numbers to a PDF document?

According to online searches, it is very easy, just open PDF in Preview, go to Tools, then Select "Add Page Numbers" or in another version "Show Page Numbers". Neither option appears on my Mac mini in Preview.

Please help.

Thanks

You can read just about anything on the Internet, but that does not mean it is true, tested, or currently relevant.

In order to add page numbers to a PDF where page numbers were never in the source that created the PDF, one would need a true PDF editor, or a user-created, Quartz Framework program to achieve the page numbering. You won't find this in Apple's Preview.

Actually, it is much simpler than I expected. Preview can't do it, but PDFgear does it very easily. Open document in PDFgear, menu Fill and Sign, Add/remove page numbers, configure to your liking, save document. Problem solved.

Now, if only I could figure out how to zip and password protect file on Mac. worked the entire day and gave up. Had to go to Windows PC to do that in seconds.

Not good Apple doesn't have that functionality.

PDFGear is a proper PDF editor, which is why as I have stated you need that type of application to edit the PDF.

Although one can use the Finder to select a file and from the Finder secondary menu, choose compress "..." to create a zip file of the document, there is no visual user interface to set an encrypted password on that newly zipped document.

If you want the Mac version of WinZip, be prepared to pay for it. There is a 1-month trial version of it in the Mac App Store with in-app purchases.
