The Apple TV app on your Mac brings you:
- Apple TV+, by subscription;
- in-app Apple TV app channels, each by subscription;
- Store movies (and TV shows in select countries), to buy or rent;
- a Library, to which one can add personal videos as well.
It is not that similar to the Apple TV box, however: Macs do generally not have the same third party apps, with a few exceptions (there is e.g. a Prime Video app for Mac available). Most third party streaming services require web access on a computer, though; not a specialized app.
Mac uses can stream or screen mirror to the Apple TV box through AirPlay.
Apple TV box users can access media files in the Mac Apple TV app Library through Home Sharing.
Users can screenshot (non-DRM’ed content on) the Apple TV box through Xcode. Users can record (non-DRM’ed content on) the Apple TV box through QuickTime Player. That is about all the direct interaction that exists between the Mac and the Apple TV box.
