How do I fix "This accessory uses too much power" error on my iPhone 15 Pro Max?

Hello,

I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max for more than a year now and every once in a while it gives me hard time charging it.

A few months ago it showed liquid detected message although there were no liquid nor humidity and it worked again next morning.

Now and after the upgrade to latest iOS (mainstream version not beta), it showed a new message, “This accessory uses too much power” it kept doing so every 1 or 2% while charging so I disconnected it and today it refused to charge at all, using the same block and cable!

I usually use my Apple’s block along with an Anker certified 1.8 M cable, I replaced the Anker cable with Apple’s original and the phone started to charge, which looks like a faulty USB C cable, no dear, the same cable is charging my iPad Pro now without any problems.

I have Apple’s original block, Anker’s cube power port III 20w block with 2 cables, Apple’s original and Anker’s 1.8 M certified cable.

No matter which 2 components of the above you will use, eventually they both will stop charging the phone and cause an error message. If you switch the block or the cable, the phone starts charging again. In a few weeks, If I go back to my previous block and cable, they will work again!!

This looks to me like a software issue and not hardware related issue.

I have been an Apple users since generation 1 back in 2007 and I have not regretted any model I got as I regretted replacing my 14 Pro Max with my current 15 Pro Max, the 15 has endless issues with battery performance and charging, unfortunately.

A liquid warning can be a very serious issue. Did you have Apple examine the iPhone or do remote diagnostics on it?

In my experience, going back as far as the same gen iPhone in 2007, this is a hardware issue.

You need to have Apple perform diagnostics on your iPhone. It can be done in person at an Apple Retail Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can also contact Apple Support and request remote diagnostics.

Thanks Jeff for the heads up, the liquid warning is not my current issue, though it occasionally happens and I’m sure that my phone was not even close to a liquid and no high humidity that can cause it.

I had my phone tested remotely and it was OK.

Leaving the phone for sometimes less than an hour will make the message go away.

Current issue is different, and it went away too, this accessory is using too much Power.

Having a couple of blocks & couple of cables working fine and in a few months a pair of them stops working so you switch cables, all pairs will now work!

Few months later, it will stop again, I will switch the pairs again and it will start working!!

My guess is that Apple is having a hard time when it comes to 15 Pro Max battery and charging.

Hi Jeff,

I already did have my phone diagnosed remotely a couple of months ago and there we didn’t find any issues, this is why I assumed that it could be a software bug or so. Anyways the objective of posting here is to check if others are having this issue or not, and what encouraged me more to post was that i actually found a thread here talking about the same issue starting late 2023 and it had a lot of users who experienced the same issue of this accessory uses too much power.
