I got a brand new iphone 16 pro from us as a gift and am in india but the network provider shows sim locked even tho it doesnt have a esim in it. Idk which provider it could be connected to but i contacted my service provider for any issues and they said its not thier netwokr the phone is locked to.
since its brand new and was just unboxed i dont get hiw there could be a sim lock

Ask whoever you got the gift from where they got it. The only source for unlocked iPhones in the US is directly from Apple.
If it was purchased from any other source, it is NOT unlocked. Devices sold in US retails stores other than Apple will lock to the first US carrier used to activate them. They can not be activated on a non-US carrier.

No one is questioning if it's a real iPhone or who its registered to. If it was bought from anyone other than Apple it will be carrier locked and you won't be able to use it in India until whoever it's locked to unlocks it IF they will even consider unlocking it. As you're not their customer, they have no obligation to you at all.
