How do I lock a Home Screen layout on my iPad Air?

How to I lock the app Home Screen layout, so that the layout remains the same, unless I unlock it.

recently I repeatedly have widgets randomly open up on my home page, which I didn’t request.

e.g calendar, clock and task widgets. This causes the whole layout to shift to other pages.

and I have to manually delete the widgets, then manually move the apps back to the layout I want.

everywhere I look says I just go to Home Screen in settings… and lock layout. Nope. Doesn’t exist.

I have an iPad air4 with latest iOS updates.

Other than when you perform a major version update - such as updating from iPadOS 17.x to 18.x - it would be highly unusual for additional Widgets to be added to your iPad Home Screens.

An iPadOS point-update, that introduce a new App, is likely to add a corresponding icon to a Home Page - which may cause your Home Page icons to be rearranged; this will only occur only one-time when the new App icon is added to your iPad.

Be aware that your Home Screen icon and widget layout is set independently for both Landscape and Portrait screen orientation. As such, rotating your screen between Landscape and Portrait and back can be expected to cause the icons/widgets to re-arrange between the two layouts that you have chosen.

If your Home Screen icons/widgets rearrange at other times, such as when restarting your iPad, this may be an indication that something is not as it should be. If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assist with troubleshooting the problem:

thankyou for that very thorough set of information

I have performed a full factory rest as a hard reboot did not work, in fact it triggered the errant widgets and stacks to return

  1. re Other than when you perform a major version update - such as updating from iPadOS 17.x to 18.x - it would be highly unusual for additional Widgets to be added to your iPad Home Screens. i must just be unlucky because unusual or not it happens evrytime i run out of battery and it comes back after recharging, an update reset overnight, or when i do a hard reset, i now know.
  2. I am confused re the Homescreen layout being set different of prtrait or landscape, that suggests you can set your layout. but there is NO layout lock is there? anyway not an issue for me as always use in landscape.
  3. Apple shop allowed me to check all new iphones and ipads they had in stock, and none of them have a HomeScreen layout lock, as i have on my android phone. despite googling solutions showing me instructions on how to go to Settings-homescreen- lock layout.. whcih doesnt exist.

lets see how the factory reset goes.

iPadOS offers no facility to "lock" the layout - regardless of iPad model or installed version of iPadOS.

Apple invite submission of comments and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. If you would like to see a specific feature or functionality in a future version of iPadOS, this would be the most appropriate channel through which to make a request:

What does exist is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout.

That will reset the layout to the factory default.

thanks but you misunderstand. i dont want to reset to default, that would still leave the issue of going through the rigmarole of reorganising apps to the way i wish. I wish to lock the Homescreen layout. so the apps remain in the same position.

currently if there is an update or the ipad is rebooted, widgets I have not asked for are inserted... Calendar, Clock, weather etc. which in turn kicks my other apps onto another page. I have not chosen these widgets, I have others in my set up. i just wish to have my homescreen layout remain the way I wish.

On my android phone this is wasy, you go to 'settings', Home screen.... then there is a chice to lock home screen layout. the layout can only be chanGED BBY YOU OR THE SYSTEM IF YOU TURN THIS OFF.

i went into the Apple store nearby, and they knew less than me. on other Ipads or Iphones there , there is no option to do this in settings-homescreen. when you google it.... it says to go to 'homescreen' in settings and lock layout. which simply doesnt. exist.

it may be that Apple doesnt allow, which in my opinion is awful, but the fact that some 'experts' say you can gives me hope. but the nstructions to follow do not eem to be possibe.

so again reset to default is in no way whaat i need, but thanks for trying anyway

anyone else?
