Handwriting function not working in iMessages on iPhone 14 Pro Max with iOS 18.3.2 in Ireland

I’m trying to get the handwriting function to work in iMessages when I turned the phone sideways. I get the little symbol at the bottom right hand corner to enable the handwriting. Also I get is just a blank screen. I’m not able to write anything. I’m not getting any pre-text at the bottom. I’m currently running on the latest iOS 18.3.2 phone I’m using is the 14 pro Max, I’m in Ireland.
