How to get a refund for an app charged for an hour after free trial ended?

My wife is an artist and signed up for a one week trial of Smartist, an app that displays your artwork in one of its virtual rooms. On the App Store the pricing was confusing, (£89.99 for a year, or £35 [ish] for —a year!(?)

She then contacted the company and they explained that the confusing pricing was something to do with Apple’s online uploading of details. The company also kindly offered my wife the annual subscription for the lower price. Unfortunately this conversation took a few days and the week’s trial had elapsed by a few hours by the time we got to the bottom of the pricing query.

My wife was horrified to then see that £89.99 had been taken from her account.

We contacted Smartist and they informed us that we had to take this up with Apple. I did so, explaining the chain of events and I enclosed the email from Smartist with the offer of the cheaper annual fee.

Apple replied saying that no refund was possible and that was the end of the matter. Thanks a lot Apple! A curt reply with no possibility of a discussion. Is this really the end of it? My wife doesn’t have money to throw away and the mistake, although hers, surely is mitigated by the pricing confusion?

The issue has been resolved now and my wife has her refund.

it took some persistence and I was told more than once that because some algorithm had made the decision, there was nothing they could do. I insisted on talking to a manager and she put the case to actual humans. They could not reasonably argue the case so we got the refund.

Good Job and thanks for the update! In the past that would not have been possible as had been reported previously by many here, so that is a sign that Apple is getting better, although it may require changing your User Name.

When you agree to a subscription, reduced fee trial, free trial etc. the details are clearly laid out. The details include when a trial (free trial) subscription must be cancelled to avoided being billed for additional subscription fees. The prices are also disclosed. If there is confusion over pricing, don’t subscribe and seek clarification from Apple and the developer.

When you agree to the trial or subscription, you also agree to being billed for the additional fees if not cancelled within the allotted time period.

Use of the app is not monitored. Apple does not monitor everyone’s iPhone for app usage. You started a trial, failed to cancel the subscription within the time period. You agreed to all of this by using Face ID or double clicking to approve it.

This has also happened to me. I have been using the free version of the app for almost a year, and then suddenly last week, I had $129.99 debited from my bank account. I was not informed that I had been signed up to the pro version. There was no message, no box I had to tick to consent, no terms and conditions….

I requested a refund and two days later, they said it was declined and that I had another 24-48 hours to provide an explanation as to why I was entitled to a refund. I have done so and now waiting. My question to Apple is to provide me with an explanation as to how I suddenly became a pro subscriber on 16 April, when I haven’t used the app for weeks, and how they are entitled to just take money out of someone’s bank account. I am totally in the dark about this.

I will approach my bank manager tomorrow to dispute the debit.

Thanks, I appreciate the information and will make a point of looking out for these details next time I get a “free” app.
It’s interesting you say that the details are clearly laid out. Surely if they were, I and a lot of other people would notice them. It needs to be made more clear.
I have cancelled my subscription and deleted the app - as well as appealed the decision by Apple to not refund my money.
It is a sign I need to set up notifications of debits from my bank account. Although it appears that once Apple take your money, they are not forthcoming in giving refunds.

It is all on the page that requires you to double click the side button for approval followed by verification with FaceID/TouchID or Passcode. Some may just double click without reading what the trial period is or the subscription price they will be charged if not cancelled. There really is very little on the screen other than those important details of the charge you are about to approve.

In most cases, all transactions in the App Store are final due to this explicit requirement by you to perform those actions. Of course, that is the reason why you are required to double click, so it is not something that can be done by accident.

Could you please help me with another question?

It appears that I was also charged last year on the same date, so unbeknownst to me, I have been subscribed for more than a year and this latest deduction is a renewal.

Last year, the subscription deducted from my account was 59.99. This year, it is 129.99.

Where/when would I have “agreed” or double clicked to accept this price change?
