well, now that I haven’t solved my problem, I have a new one. How do I stop answers to my question? I just wanted to delete my question.

You can't delete your question. And it might actually help someone else who stumbles across it.

OK pal. You are right. You did understand my problem and I was inept at understanding your explanation. I entered the digital age when I was 60. I am now 80. This stuff is not instinctive to someone like myself. I picked it up pretty well but this constant "upgrading" gets harder and harder to learn. Young people think new is better but having to keep learning new (and not necessarily better) processes seems to make life unnecessarily complicated. I want to use my phone and not continually try to figure out what changed. Thanks for your efforts.

I'm glad you've got it sorted! Don't sell yourself short with the age thing. I'm in my 70s now and yes, things change all the time. We can still learn and grow with technology, even us OLD geezers!

Questions cannot be deleted.

If you want to turn off a Focus open your Control Center by Swiping from upper right corner. See screenshot below.

My Focus Mode is set to Fitness, yours may display a different focus mode. Tap the button, tap the mode activated to disable.

Please follow instructions in support article below on how to change Wallpaper.

OK. I believe you. I'm wondering if you've set up a custom focus, which does let you change the wallpaper for that focus? Apple is still not changing your wallpaper, NOR controlling your phone, but you've got some setting enabled for this to happen. Perhaps this link will help you --> Set up a Focus on iPhone - Apple Support

If this doesn't help you, I'd recommend you reach out to Apple Support directly for help. If you're in the US, you can call Apple at: 800-MY-APPLE.

Ps: Jeff, I was researching this at the time you posted and had started the above reply, so didn't see you were thinking the same thing.

lobsterghost1, focus mode can actually change your Home Screen and wallpaper, and I think that what is happening is that the wallpaper he wants is set to the do not disturb focus mode and when he turns the focus off the wallpaper goes back to default.

Yes, I'm aware and if you had read my follow on post, you'd already know I figured that out.

  1. Is this your corporate/organisation/enterprise/School Management iPhone? Then please contact the system administrator of your corporate//organisation/enterprise/School Management
  2. If it is your device, in that case, do you have any profile installed by your corporate/organisation/enterprise/School Management?
    1. Erase the profile added by you If you have installed a profile on your own --> Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone - Apple ...
    2. Or please contact the system administrator of the organisation who provided the profile to you

A corporate profile installed on your iPhone could potentially be contributing to the Wallpaper issue.

Here's why:

  • Restrictions: Corporate profiles can have restrictions placed on apps and functionalities. These restrictions might be limiting background activity for Wallpapers, causing it to change.
  • Managed Apps: IT departments might deploy specific navigation apps through the profile, potentially conflicting with the iOS Wallpapers.
  • Security Settings: Corporate profiles often have stricter security settings that could affect app behavior.

Here's what you can do:

  • Check with IT: The best course of action is to contact your IT department. They can explain the restrictions set by the corporate profile and see if Wallpapers are affected. They might be able to adjust settings or suggest alternative navigation apps approved for corporate use.
  • Look for App Conflicts: See if your IT department uses a different navigation app through the corporate profile. Conflicting apps might cause crashes.

Additional points to consider:

  • Even if the profile isn't directly affecting Wallpapers, it's still a good idea to check with IT. They might be aware of similar issues and have workarounds.

By working with IT and considering these possibilities, you can hopefully identify if the corporate profile is the culprit and find a solution that allows you to use wallpapers to your liking.

this sounds like it's related to the Focus Mode wallpaper feature. Try to go to the Focus settings, Tap Do Not Disturb or any other Focus mode you use. And Scroll down to Customize Screens and If there's a lock screen & wallpaper set here, tap and remove it

Hope that helps!

First of all, Do Not Disturb has no affect on the Wallpaper on your phone. Secondly, Apple isn't controlling your phone, nor are they changing your Wallpaper. They can't do that. So your assertion here is simply not correct.

That doesn't mean you don't have a Wallpaper issue, it's just not because Apple is controlling your phone.

I can't even imagine what the issue is, to be honest. Your tag line says you have an iPhone XR on iOS 16. You have an iPhone released in 2018, 7 years ago and if you are still running iOS 16, you haven't updated your iPhone since 2023 at a minimum. You're on an old iPhone, which is running an iOS version two generations out of date.

As pointed out the latest version for your iPhone XR is 18.3.2 which is the same model iPhone I use daily running with the latest version. I highly recommend you do so but if you're reluctant to update for whatever reason that's your call.

Arthur.... you are absolutely right. I finally figured out that the picture I wanted for my wallpaper said "do not disturb" on it and every time I turned off, do not disturb the wallpaper would change when I turned off the phone. It was all a matter of my not understanding all the unnecessary complications of an iPhone. They think they are so smart when they keep changing things and adding on things. Not in my mind. People really need a focus setting for every possibility? 🙄
