Since updating to 15.4 my messages ap and Podcast app on my mac just shut down. They don't appear to crash since I don't receive a pop up stating the app has crashed. I don't appear to be having issues with any other apps. Suggestions on how to repair or fix?

This happened to me, too, on June 6. I have an iPhone and two Macs (both using iMessage in iCloud). My iPhone was fine, but iMessage on both of my Macs was stuck and non-responsive, even after multiple force quits and SAFE mode restarts.
After reading this thread, I noticed a mention of a sticker. The last message I had received was from an old thread that included a Thanksgiving Peanuts sticker. I could delete this message on my iPhone and M2 MacBook Air without any problems, but my M1 iMac was stuck and wouldn’t let me delete the message or get iMessage stable.
What finally worked was:
After these steps, iMessage was empty but stable. I then reenabled iMessage syncing in iCloud, and iMessage synced all my messages (except the one with the sticker that caused the issue). It has remained stable since.
Same issue, message app closes on its own (crashes) after updating to 15.4.1 running on Mac M1 (late 2020).
Also, I've noticed other apps running slowly and I'm nowhere near memory capacity--less than half of 1TB storage and RAM (or whatever it's called now) has plenty of room.
Tried rebooting, doesn't help.

Update to 15.5 has NOT fixed the issue for me. Messages is snappier in loading a conversation history when scrolling back, but only up to a certain point (about 4yrs of daily messaging loaded, but more years are available). Then the app becomes sluggish, with spinning beach ball showing regularly. Pressing cmd-P to print the conversation to pdf results in constant beach ball. Left the app open overnight to sort it all out in its own pace, next morning is was shut down.
mbp a1990 15.4.1 > 15.5 iMessage (&FT) still sad.
new admin account, no probs using iMessage on other accounts same mbp. afaik everything else ok except both iMessage (whilst not logged into) & FaceTime (logged into & working but if quit then requires fresh login...) both running hot for what?
'ways.. iMessage, enter account, fine, enter password - don't fiddle - cie la vie, crashes.

i see your point, not sure how to assess what activity monitor tells me. Seems to take a lot of CPU, but not a lot of memory. I have a 16Gb M3 MacBook Air, should be enough memory. Other applications run smoothly alongside the messages app. I submitted crash reports, hope it gets sorted out.

Holding shift down has kept it running since my response at 8:30 but it's now 2:30 my time and it has crashed again. Will try the safe mode reboot.

Yes tried it and no change. I have been trying to see if specific apps are causing the issue but no luck. My podcast app is also doing the same thing now.
I'm seeing exactly the same issue since I upgraded to 15.4. Podcasts app just closes randomly, no crash message, nothing in Console logs.
I've submitted a report to Apple using Feedback Assistant and included a link to this thread.
I'd add the Overcast and Kindle apps are also "quietly" closing/crashing since 15.4 was installed.
It's becoming ridiculous. The Messages app now quietly crashes almost hourly.
In macOS, holding down the Shift key while launching an app can sometimes trigger special behavior, but for the Messages app specifically, it does not have any documented or known effect.
I'm experiencing on my M4 MBP, so this annoying bug isn't isolated to the M1 and M2.
