How do I remove “update finishing in background” under battery settings?

After updating to IOS 18.4 yesterday, I encountered the following message under my battery settings “update finishing in background. You can use your iPhone as you normally would while a recent software update finishes. This could take awhile. Battery life and thermal performance may improve once finished”.

What can I do to make it go away? Do I need to contact Apple Support? I am concerned it will eat into my battery life and health.

You can’t just make it go away, and no you do not need to contact Apple Support, as neither can they make it go away. Once the iPhone completes the post-update processes, the message will go away. There really is no clear definition of how long the update processes take. This is mainly indexing where your iPhone must work extra hard to organize and creates a searchable database of your data. Also your iPhone must incorporate and move new features with the update.

You can experience an increased battery drain and thermal temperatures from that, what the message is saying. The duration can depend on how much data you have and background activity. But it most certainly will not harm your battery health. If it did, no one would want to update.

When I updated my iPhone to iOS 18.4, it took about a week before the message went away. Considering that you only updated yesterday, you will probably have the message for a bit longer. But again, nothing to worry about.

Removing Battery Message After the Update:

A. Confirm the Update Installation:

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: About
  4. View: iOS Version

B. Force Restart your iPhone:

Try a Force Restart and see if this then goes away: Force Restart iPhone – Apple Support

C. View the Battery Health:

Apple recommends you get a new battery, once the Battery Health reaches below 80%. When the Battery Health is below 80%, it is time for a new battery.

  1. Go To: Settings
  2. Tap: Battery
  3. Tap: Battery Health
  4. View: [the percentage]
  5. Is it Below 80%?  If so, it is time for a new battery. Get one from Apple or from an AASP

Since 18.4 and now on 18.5 , im having issue with same "Update Finishing In Background" since then my battery charging has been wonky ... it no longer charges full to 100% even though I have set it , and the power will hold at 75% , and I need to do a soft reset of the phone, then it charges to 90% or 95% , then while on the charger the power drops while still charging !

Did the phone overheating issue also resolve?

Apart from that, I'm also experiencing Siri recognition issues. I talk to Siri, and it only works in every other case, especially through my Airpods (Apple Intelligence models were also downloaded after the iOS 18.5 update yesterday, it may also add to the background processes).

I hope this all will resolve after the dust settles, iPhone 16 pro.
