My friend recently found an AirPods. how can I identify the owner so that I can return it.

You will not be able to identify the owner. And Apple will not help you do this. It sounds like you may have been at a laundromat. Please return the AirPods to the person in charge. That is who the owner of the pods is likely to contact.
