iPhone 12 mini Photos app not showing geolocation while viewing images with iOS 18.4

Hello,

I noticed my iPhone 12 mini's updated iOS v18.4's Photos app doesn't show my old and recent photos' geolocations anymore when viewing each image. If I show Maps collection, then I do see them. Why can't I view their map location when I view one photo? It used to show up before. Did v18.4 break this feature or something? I already tried rebooting my iPhone too. Also, I am not using iCloud for photos.

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

https://old.reddit.com/r/iphonehelp/comments/1ju1q9t/missing_map_locations_when_viewing_my_iphones/moo5euf/ gave me the answer which is weird/odd: "Had the same issue , I am on 16 Pro Max running 18.4.1 . If you have Require Face ID to open the Photos app, that is the cause for the photos not showing location when you swipe up.

Long press the photos app and tap “Don’t Require Face ID” , close and reopen app, now your photos should show location data on map when you swipe up on a photo.

Hope this helps! ..."

It sounds like a bug to me so I asked this user and others to report it to Apple. I will report it too soon.

Yes, it seems that for some phones, requiring Face ID for opening Hidden and Recently Deleted also somehow prevents locations from showing. I'm not sure who this affects-- I have a 16, and I don't have the issue. Perhaps it's an interaction with some other security feature or some other app, but know one seems to know.

For now, turning off Face ID for Hidden is the solution, if this is the problem.

Whatl is missing? Is the tiny map missing below the photo, when you open it to view it enlarged, or is the name of the location missing at the top of the photo above the date?

I am now seeing both on my iPhone with iOS 18.4, the location name and the map. But directly after the update Photos needed time to scan the photos again for the locations and it took a while until the name of the location has been shown again.

And photos needs to be able to access Apple's location database. is your iPhone connected to Wi-Fi?

So it's clear that the GPS coordinates are safely stored in the Photos database, and the only problem is getting to the internet to assign a name to the location. I get very similar results to yours when I turn on Airplane Mode on my phone.

So léonie's suggestion to plug in the phone, make sure it has a good internet connection, and leave it alone, is your best bet!

I always have plugged in since its original battery health is 76%, good wifi, etc. Yeah, cellular is almost non-existence here in rural area. I assume cellular is not required if wifi Internet works.

Locations are fine for me. Have you tried a forced restart?
Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
This is different from a simple Power Off. I had to continue holding the button down for while after the “Power Off” message came up.

Is that simple power off the same as slide to power off and turn back on in settings' and control center? Or is this different?

Anyways, I tried your suggestion. Same result. :(

Report this to Apple...

So, do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of you occurrences, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

Oooh, I did it wrong. I had to keep pressing the right button down during "slide to power off" part, then screen goes black, and then Apple logo comes up to boot up. That's new to me. So, this is a hard reboot and the non-buttons trick is just a soft reboot. That's new to me. Thanks. Anyways, the issue still remains. :(
