128 GB isn't a huge amount of storage for a phone these days, especially if you take a lot of photos and videos.

I have about 7,000 photos and they take up about 42 GB of space on my Mac – which is set up to keep full-size copies of all of the photos in my iCloud Photos library, so that when I back up the Mac, I'm backing up all of the photos, in full quality, too. I don't have a lot of videos – if I did, the storage requirements would be much larger.

I suspect that your friend is using iCloud Photos with "Optimize iPhone Storage" enabled, and paid for an iCloud+ storage plan with enough room to store iCloud backups and full-size copies of all of their photos and videos. The "Optimize iPhone Storage" setting tells the phone that it is OK for it to keep reduced-quality, space-saving copies on the phone itself, to free up device storage. The full-size copies remain in iCloud and the phone can fetch them over the Internet on an as-needed basis.

If you are not using iCloud Photos, or do not have "Optimize iPhone Storage" enabled, then your phone is going to be keeping full-size copies of all of your photos and videos in device storage at all times.

Just to add a quick note:

If you have a lot of photos, and value them, using iCloud Photos and paying for enough iCloud+ storage space to hold all of your photos is definitely worthwhile.

There are four ways to "back up" your photos on an iPhone:

  • Using iCloud Photos.
  • Making iCloud backups that include photos.
  • Periodically backing up the phone in some other way (with the risk that you might forget to do backups often enough).
  • Not backing up your phone at all – in which case, if you forget your passcode, or the phone gets damaged, or some thief steals your phone, you have lost all of your photos with no way of getting them back.
