iPhone 15 Plus showing overheating warnings during video calls

Dear iPhone Experts,

I was on a Line video call with my wife and a friend for 50 minutes (we could see each other live) when my wife received a "Temperature Overheating" warning on her iPhone, prompting her to cool down the device. Only the Line app was running, no CPU-intensive apps like Instagram, phone camera and YouTube were open.

I purchased this iPhone 15 Plus (512GB) for my wife on April 24, 2025 and I'm not sure if it has been updated to the latest iOS version.

I’ve read through this discussion thread to the very end, but it doesn’t mention any clear solutions. Has anyone found a way to prevent the iPhone from overheating during video calls? Or has Apple already released a patch to address this overheating issue?

My wife's iPhone 15 Plus is covered by AppleCare. If the issue persists, would it be possible to exchange it for an iPhone 16 Plus by paying the difference?

Thanks!

There is a lot going on during a video conference call. The camera is being used, WiFi or cellular modem, both high performance CPU’s and GPU’s (to decompress high resolution video in real time and play 30 frames per second) and generally people increase the screen brightness. All the above cause the iPhone to continuously heat up above the ambient temperature.

The greater use of processors, modem, screen brightness etc. cause rapid discharge of the battery which also produces heat.

All that is to say it could be fairly normal on a longer call. iPhones are designed to reduce screen brightness and take other precautions to protect critical components from excessive heat. It sounds like your iPhone worked as it should.

Just for peace of mind You may want to have Apple perform diagnostics on your iPhone. It can be done in person at an Apple Retail Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can also contact Apple Support and request remote diagnostics.
