iPadOS 17.7.7 update has really caused issues to my iPad Pro

This update has really caused issues to my iPad Pro 10.5 inch. Some apps have lost all state every time they are reopened, and revert back to their initial initialisation screens. Programs like procreate show their example artworks. Some games have lost all progress, and apps like YouTube ask me to log in each time.

I have tried a full reset / restore, to no avail, but that added a new issue which now once a day I am asked to log in with my password rather than Touch ID as "I have recently changed my password". I downgraded to 17.7.6 to find the restore for the iPad does not work, so had to reinstall 17.7.7 before restoring.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you StephC74

I tried your suggestion about 4-5 hours ago, and so far it is looking positive, not had anything reset itself or boot me out yet.

I can't pretend I understand why or how it works, but it does appear to have worked for me, the morning will confirm or otherwise

"Restart iPad using the top button and either of the volume buttons. Slide to power off and then wait 30 seconds before powering on.

Toggle your iCloud settings. Settings, tap your name, icloud

Temporarily disable iCloud drive and iCloud keychain

Restart your device and then re-enable iCloud Drive and iCloud Keychain.

I have the same issue on my 6th gen ipad after it installed update 17.7.7. It keeps resetting my app preferences every time I open and close an app (happens with reddit, gmail, apple maps, etc). I also have issues with YouTube signing in every time I open and it crashes whenever I pick a video that has tons of views. I did find that using incognito doesn't crash YT, but I don't want to deal with ads. I tried restoring and resetting the ipad with no changes every time since last night. It's pretty ridiculous that Apple decided to release this os patch with new bugs.

I reverted to 17.7.6 and that was fine, but my backup file then wouldn't restore over it - I had to update back to 17.7.7 for the backup file to restore correctly.

You can only restore a backup to a device with the same of later version of iPadOS that created the backup. As such, if your pre-existing iCloud backup had itself been updated after your iPad had been updated to iPadOS 17.7.7, you'll not be able to restore this backup to a device with iPadOS 17.7.6 or earlier.

If your iCloud backup had not been updated, the backup would have usable after returning the iPad to the previously installed version.

@Mac Jim ID: Thank you for these details. But this would mean that the developers of Safari for iPadOS (and probably some other Apple iOS apps) also ignored (or forgot) to "include the reasons for using NSUserDefaults"? Well, if this is the case then I will give up! And buy a new iPad. Or ask Apple for a refund.

At the moment I do not "believe" that Apple added this new "security feature" in the RC. Resulting in making many apps on all "older" iPads unusable?

Thier reply to me

Understood Andy, currently Apple is aware of this unexpected situation and is being reviewed by the engineering department to locate the root cause and proceed with the necessary adjustments to solve this situation as soon as possible. for the moment will be necessary to wait to get a response from the engineering department to take the necessary actions or wait until is released a new iPadOS version fixing this error on the devices with this iPadOS version, my apologies for this temporary situation

Same issue as everyone else on my iPad Pro running OnSong. We use OnSong for live performances. The iPad holds our sets and backing tracks. Since updating to IOS 17.7.7 the foot pedal control no longer remembers its settings when the app is closed and the OnSong 2024 defaults back to its initial state. Ie it has all settings back to the default (new app) state and all our settings for performance are gone. This is a killer for live performances.

Agreed.

Sadly, it’s not very clear that a “restore” is just your Apps and Data…. NOT a full restoration of your iPad state at the time of the backup - which, given this current situation is what we all might want instead.

I also went through a pointless restore to get back to….. 17.7.7 again :((

Apple support is basically saying that we just have to wait.

I have lost all of my (only) game data, but everything else seems to have been fixed for me.

Unfortunately, if data was lost when the iPadOS 17.7.7 update was installed, it can only be retrieved from a backup that pre-exists the defective update. If you don't have a backup of the game data, if not stored elsewhere, this data will have been irretrievably lost.
