Magic Keyboard not working with my iPad Air (4th gen)

This is on an iPad Air 4th generation. The iPad has three connection buttons on the back that mate with the keyboard. I noticed the middle pad on the iPad and button on the keyboard seem dark. I tried to clean it but noticed it is not dirt - it seems like damaged metal from arcing?

Anyone else see this? I'm afraid my expensive iPad is damaged from the Apple branded Magic Keyboard.

Any help appreciated.

Remove the iPad from the Keyboard - and carefully/gently clean the smart connector contacts on both the iPad and keyboard with a soft pencil eraser (a drafting-film eraser is ideal). Ensure that the contacts on both iPad and keyboard are dirt and dust free - and all debris from the eraser have been removed - before reconnecting the two.

If you are unable to resolve the problem, you would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assess your iPad and Keyboard for damage:
