How can I recover missing photos from iCloud library?

I've been using iPhoto and now Photos for years - since at least 2009 (if not earlier). I discovered recently that many, many photos had disappeared from my library. I do use iCloud photo sync. It took me some time to track down and confirm but I did indeed find that any photos that were NOT part of an album, explicitly, were suddenly missing from my library. Thankfully, at some point I had started to save individual libraries for each year (sadly only up to a point) so I can recover some of what is now missing.

Just curious if anyone else has seen anything like this. Again, I have all the photos that I'd specifically added to ANY album, but all the rest are just gone. I did add a new Mac mini M4 earlier this year - otherwise, no big changes to my iCloud account.

Are you noticing this on multiple devices? Just Mac(s), or iPhone(s) and iPad(s) also? What system versions?

If by any chance you are noticing this primarily on an iPhone with a very recent version of iOS, check that you have not engaged the new "Not in an Album" filter (in the Filter section of the menu displayed by tapping the double arrows at bottom left of the screen in the Library view).

Sadly I think I know what's happened here - because it just happened again.

When I got the new Mac Mini earlier this year - I had forgotten that my previous system was using an external SSD to hold the photo library. So, just like when you manually choose a different library and tell it that you want to make it be the System library - you only get things in that library that are downloaded already. In my case, using Optimized storage on a new system, I only got the albums I had.

Jump to today - I thought I'd move my library back to an external drive because of limited storage space. Had spent the last week re-importing all the old stuff to the internal library. Had almost 90k photos back in place. But moved the library, set it as system and told it to use Optimized iCloud. Library now has just 5k photos.

Ready to pull my hair out. Luckily I still have everything - and it does appear using the web that iCloud still has them all - but why is it so hard to keep the local library showing everything? Ugh.

I use "Optimize" on my iPhone because, well, it's small and slow compared to a computer. It's great to be able to scan through pictures quickly but have full access to some when I need to.

I don't use "Optimize" on my Mac, because I got one with lots of storage, and because I can use easily use external hard drives with it. Also, I want to be able to back up my pictures, and Optimize would mean that I wouldn't have all my pictures on my Mac to back up. As I said earlier, I have a smaller (18K pictures) Favorites Library that connects to iCloud that I can keep on my internal drive, but archive Libraries are kept on an external drive.

I don't want to keep my System Library on an external drive, because I am carrying my MacBook around, and it's problematic to be plugging and unplugging an iCloud connected Library all the time. But you have a desktop system, and there is nothing keeping you from having your Photos Library on a fast external drive. By fast, I mean a pretty good Solid State Drive. I use a spinning HDD for Time Machine (since I can leave it overnight,) and I see a real difference in speed and function from the SSDs I have.

And you should have a drive for Time Machine as well as a drive for Photos and other overflow stuff. I have other drives that I connect when I need old archives.

Seriously, if you don't have to use Optimize, then you shouldn't.

Low storage is a real headache. Apple recommends that you keep 10% of your storage free. On a 1TB drive, I even found that I began having difficulties with over 100GB free-- it cleared up with 150 GB free.

I keep a smaller "Favorites" library on the internal drive to share with iCloud and my phone and iPad. I can then keep the full archive on an external drive.

Yes - it was across all devices, which leads me to believe there was some sort of issue with iCloud sync somewhere along the way. I even pulled out the iMac that I replaced earlier this year and it showed the same photo library. I honestly can't recall when I the last time was that I KNOW I saw everything. I did find that it appears I have ALL photos from the last few years, it was primarily older photos. Perhaps I did something wrong at some point but it's just odd to me that so many photos were missing. I don't think I ever deliberately removed anything from the library - especially since the iCloud "optimize storage" has been enabled for quite some time.

I doubt it. I haven't plugged an iPhone into a computer in a few years. I've always set up via iCloud restore. I'm dealing with iPhone(s), Mac Mini, and previously an iMac.

And yes, I'm super thankful that I have (more than one) back up drive still kicking around. Now I'm just trying to play the balancing game of how much can reasonably fit in one library and on the primary drive of the new computer...even using Optimized storage in Photos.

Thanks - do appreciate the ideas.
