Weird blemishes on photos taken from front facing camera on iPhone 16 Pro

iPhone 16 pro user here. Couple of days ago, while on a walk, I’ve noticed a couple of weird blemishes on photos taken with the front facing camera while pointing it towards the sky. Since then, I updated the software, took my screen protector off and yet, the blemishes are still there when taking the photo with clear sky as the background. It’s not caused by the sun, as the photos are taken after sunset. I’ve been into a KRCS store, they ran some diagnostics and said that despite being able to see the blemishes on my photos, they can’t do anything about it as diagnostics show no faults. Is this simply a manufacturer fault of the front camera which I need to go and argue at an Apple store? I have Apple Care and the phone is under warranty; there’s no damage to the device. Any ideas?

Fascinating! At first sight this looks like Newton's Rings-- an interference pattern produced by reflections in adjacent lens elements. But that's not it. But it is an interference pattern. You say it's after sunset, so it's dark and the camera is working hard, amplifying things you wouldn't see in brighter light.

Are these rings always in the same spots? If different, are they always mirrored in opposite parts of the picture? Do they happen the same with telephoto and wide angle lenses? If you zoom in, are they still there? Have you tried transferring the picture to a computer and examining it there?

I'm pretty curious-- I'll have to try, tonight…

Hi Richard, when I say after sunset I mean just as the sun has set. I’ve just gone out and took some pictures now at 19:44 with the sun pretty low and the rings are still there - but it’s still pretty bright right outside now. (When I said it’s after the sun’s gone down, I was basically ruling out the possibility of it being some kind of lens flare with the sun hitting the camera lens.)

Yes they’re always in the same spot and yes they are on opposite corners of the image. As I say, this is with the selfie camera which can only zoom in and out a tiny bit - but as I zoom out, you can see more of the circles - which would suggest if there’s something in the lens itself, it has to be pretty close to the outer edge. Here’s a picture I took just now - you can see the effect very faintly.
