Getting new iPhone and switching carriers - which first?

I'm planning to buy a new iPhone from Apple using a trade-in from my current phone. I'm also planning to switch from a single - user AT&T plan to join my husband's T-Mobile plan.

Should I get the new phone set up with my current AT&T carrier first, and then switch carriers?

Or switch to T-Mobile first, then buy the new phone and have it set up in T-Mobile?

Interested in advantages/disadvantages either way.

The first thing would be, l'd do is check with T-Mobile to see if you can get a better price on the new phone and/or a better trade-in or both (i.e., see if the net price after trade is cheaper). If so, they will handle the carrier switch as part of the purchase.

Thanks. I checked into that - trade in value is the same - then a 24 month commitment is required on a different plan than we want to use. So planning to get phone from Apple either way.
