MacBook M3 2023 Webcam not working

Hi, this morning i was on a Teams call and randomly the camera stopped working, it just went black. The green light is on but the screen is black even in Photobooth, zoom, Facetime and other apps. I tried the most common solutions like: rebooting, checking system preferences, rebooting in safe mode, updating the software, I also tried the sudo killall VDCAssistant and sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant command in the terminal. I even ran Apple Diagnostics but it didin't find anything wrong and in the System Info the camera is still detected. Can anyone help me please?

Well your Mac is kind of a mess. Your report indicates that you installed CleanMyMac on it and attempted to uninstall it however you failed so CMM is still creating a problem and making a mess of Mac OS. Going forward NEVER EVER install any of the following types of third party apps:

  • Antivirus
  • Cleaning
  • Security
  • VPN
  • Maintenance

So the first thing to do is download FindAnyFile and have it search for anything with the words:

  • CleanMyMac
  • MacPaw

in them and have FAF remove them permanently.

Next, is there is ZERO evidence that you backup the computer which is shortsighted and foolish as it is a 100% guarantee you will lose data. At the very least you should be using Time Machine per the directions in Back up your Mac with Time Machine. This will require an External Hard Disk, many experienced users use the OWC Mercury Elite Pro, I'd recommend the 2 or 4TB model.

Next is the report indicates quite a number of system modifications which are potentially damaging to Mac OS. Please carefully research what you install prior to installation to ensure these products are safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest if the machine were mine I'd do the following:

  • Uninstall CMM per the directions above.
  • Then backup using Time Machine and leave Time Machine backed up.
  • Then I'd restart in the Recovery Partition and format the drive and erase. This WILL erase all of the data!
  • Then re-install Mac OS.
  • Then using Time Machine restore only your data files and then manually install any third party apps.

However, you unless you are really confident that you know what you are doing I'd ask an Apple Authorized Service Provider to do this for you.

Please do the following and we can look to see in the report if there are any clues that may be causing this behavior.

It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate towww.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

For instructions on how to download your EtreCheck report and attach it to your reply to this message please click How to use the Add Text Feature When Post… - Apple Community It is helpful to us if you download the report to your Desktop.

There's a very simple test for that. Start in Safe Mode, which will prevent all the extensions and add-on daemons and agents from starting. See if the Camera works when you launch Apple apps like FaceTime or PhotoBooth while in Safe Mode. If if does, there's your answer.

If not, I'd actually suspect a hardware problem with the camera at that point. Doesn't change the fact that the advice to clean up harmful and out-of-date things on the computer is still good advice.

Thank you for your advice! Today i had an appointment with Apple Support and they said that the only thing they could try was to reset my mac as you said...I was hoping that there were other solutions since i work with my Mac and i have lots of installed programs that are a pain to reinstall. Do you exclude the idea of a bug in the recent Sequoia 15.5 update? Because i've read someone who had similar issues and they patched it up later, i've updated it the day before the camera stopped working...Idk if they are related tho
