Why is my Apple Watch charging to only 80-81%?

I have a series 8 watch. Until a few days ago the charging performance was good. I would charge the watch around 8pm before I went to bed. It would charge to 100% and easily last until mid afternoon the following day or longer.

For the last few days the watch has only charged to 80 or 81 percent. Even though the phone widget says it's on charge it doesn't go up higher, in fact it goes down. Optimized charging is on, but why did the charging behavior change? My behavior hasn't changed, so the watch's learned behavior has changed. The upshot is that at 5am the charge level of the watch is down to 54%, not a great way to start the day. Now at 8am the charge level is 35%.

Do I just switch off optimized charging? The watch doesn't seem to be performing correctly.

Thanks very much.

I would disable the Optimized Charging feature for a couple of days and let the watch charge up to 100%.

Then enable it again and check the charging graph, if the battery really stops charging at some point during the night and keeps on charing up to 100% just before you need the watch in the morning.

Thank you Ingo. That's a really interesting thread, especially the importance of location to optimize logic.

Changing the location where you sleep and charge the watch temporarily disables optimized charge limits, seemingly for about ten days.

I have been at my current location for some time, more than 10 days. Previously my watch has always been charging to 100%. This is probably because I'm very rarely in the same place continuously for that long.

I'll try disabling Optimized Charging tonight and see what happens, if that resets it. Perhaps I should just shut it off permanently as it really seems to impact the battery performance very badly. Previously the watch would last from full charge to about 40% from 8pm to 3pm the following day, approximately 18 hours. With optimized, the performance from 80% to 35% lasts approximately 11 hours.

Thanks again.
