Why does my Apple AirTag show low battery after replacing the battery?

My apple air tag keeps showing low battery. I changed the battery, it beeped and it's still showing low battery. Any suggestions?

I can think of, at least, three reasons:

  1. First, not all CR2032 batteries are created equal. Apple has documented that certain brands of CR2032 batteries have a bitterant coating — it’s a safety feature to deter kids from swallowing them — but this coating can actually interfere with the battery contacts inside the AirTag. Duracell is a common culprit for this issue. If you're using a battery with a bitterant coating, try switching to one without (like Panasonic or Energizer) and see if the alert clears. You may also want to give the battery contacts inside the AirTag a quick visual check to ensure there’s no corrosion or debris.
  2. If the battery is definitely good and the coating isn’t a problem, it may just be a software delay or glitch. Sometimes the Find My app or iOS caches the battery status. Try removing the AirTag from your Apple ID (in Find My, tap on the AirTag > Remove Item), then re-pair it. That can often force a full status refresh.
  3. The replacement battery is defective.
