How do I secure stolen iPhone 16 Pro Max?

Hi, My iPhone 16 pro max was stolen 2 weeks ago i Sandto, South Africa. Because I have my phone number on the lock screen, I haven't rested, I have been getting messages from a link that pretends to be Apple telling me my iphone 16 pro max has been found and and that I should click on a provided link to see where it is. I didn't because I'm familiar with phishing. I've even received calls I don't pick, WhatsApp messenges, and at one time, a guy texted me to say he is a police officer and my phone was recovered and sent to the police station. I simply said thank you, keep the phone for me, and the WhatsApp number never came online. My question is: if I never provide any details, would they still be able to remove my phone from cloud? I have 2 different security activated on the phone with 2 different long and complicated passwords

As long as

  • They don't know and can't guess your Apple ID password, and
  • Any of your Apple devices that they have in their physical possession are locked with passcodes or passwords that they don't know and can't easily guess, and
  • You don't fall for "phishing" attempts

they can't remove your phone from your Apple Account.

As for plants that reprocess stolen iPhones for parts, Apple added a little feature to iOS 18 that may start to put a crimp in their "business".
