How do I dispute an unexpected auto-renewal charge for a Duolingo Super subscription on Apple?
I am writing to file a complaint regarding a misleading subscription practice involving Duolingo and Apple.
I subscribed to a Duolingo Super trial, which explicitly promised that users would receive a notification at least two days before the subscription automatically renewed. Contrary to this promise, my credit card was charged for a full year’s subscription without any prior notice. This action occurred without my knowledge or consent and violates the terms under which I agreed to the trial.
When I contacted Apple Support to request a refund, I was escalated to a senior billing advisor who stated that “Apple refund team” had decided not to issue a refund. When I asked for the rationale behind this decision, the advisor could not provide an explanation and instead referred vaguely to an internal “refund team’s decision,” whom he claimed he could not contact or connect me with.
I further asked about the transparency and accountability of such decisions, but he had no information to offer or know.
This experience was both frustrating and opaque. A brief search online reveals that I am not alone—many other consumers have reported similar issues regarding unexpected auto-renewals and a lack of accessible support or recourse.
I never intended to purchase a full-year subscription. I only consented to a free trial based on Duolingo’s promise of prior notification. I am concerned that this practice may violate consumer protection standards and request that the FCC/BBB/Apple legal team to investigate this matter.
Thank you for your attention to this issue.
Sincerely,
Bekir
