Can't sign up to WeChat using Apple account

On phone, I sent sign up QR code to friend with an account. He scanned it and was told it was successful registration but subsequent log in attempts result in "Account or Password error. Enter again."

I've done this numerous times until I get "too many attempts" msg.

I've reloaded app umpteen times but remain in this doom loop.

It's disappointing that the sign-up through Apple account isn't working.

Anyone found a solution?

Your solution is to contact WeChat support or look at their help site, not an Apple id or Apple issue.
