iPad onscreen keyboard - Caps Lock changes language

This is happening with the onscreen keyboard, no hardware keyboard connected (ever).

All posts here relate to a hardware keyboard.

There is no option in settings to disable "Caps Lock changes language". The setting of "Disable Caps Lock" makes no difference.

How do I fix this?

iPad Air, iPadOS 18

The problem is the Greek keyboard. If it is enabled, the caps lock key becomes a keyboard switch instead, and there is no caps lock function. Remove the Greek keyboard and the problem goes away, regardless of which other keyboards are enabled.

Tom is certainly the expert here. However, I wonder if the "English & Spanish" could be part of the problem. I seem to recall reading a number of other posts where the bilingual keyboards caused unexpected results.

I would recommend removing all of the keyboards except for one in your primary language. Force restart the device, then keyboard back one at a time, testing after each one.

That might make the problem go away, and I might do that when all other options are exhausted. As a developer I have a natural aversion to solutions that merely sweep the bug under the rug (where it can be snug? :-) I'd much rather do as much troubleshooting as possible, so there's a chance of actually fixing the bug, before giving up.

Thanks for all the info. My ipad is to0 small to verify if all larger ipads (which can have a more elaborate keyboard than the mini) behave like yours does (so it might be considered a "feature" instead of a "bug"). If not, it would be good to report this to Apple via

including a link to this discussion so they can see your images, etc.

Interesting! Are you running 18.5 (and not a beta of something later)?

Is your Greek keyboard the one provided by Apple?

My own ipad is a mini and does not have caps lock on the keyboard, so I cannot try to duplicate, but as far as I know caps lock on the screen keyboard should not be able to change keyboards like that.

Does it still work that way if you turn off Enable Caps Lock in the settings?

Can you get that key to produce caps lock via either long press or double tap?

Nope, double-tap just switches twice (back to the keyboard I started on) as expected. Long press acts the same as short press or tap (just switches keyboards).

I CAN get caps by double-tapping the regular Shift key (as has always been the case).

I suppose it's possible this is specific to my model (A2898 - MV283LL/A)

As an aside, even before this problem started occurring I've been seeing weird CapsLock behavior. In some apps (not all) it would sometimes take a second tap to enable CapsLock, and then two taps to disable CapsLock.

It should really take you all of about 5 minutes. And if it works, you'll have all of your keyboards back just the way they are now. Honestly, the likelihood of actually figuring out why you have the problem is not that great.

Google says there's a "Switch Languages using Caps Lock" option, but it appears only if you have a hardware keyboard. I DON'T have a hardware keyboard and that option does not appear in my Settings. Here's what google says:

Here's how to turn off the "Switch Languages using Caps Lock" feature on your iPad, even if you don't have a hardware keyboard connected:
1. Go to Settings: Open the Settings app on your iPad.
2. Navigate to Keyboard Settings: Tap on "General," then "Keyboard," and finally "Hardware Keyboard".
3. Disable "Switch Languages using Caps Lock": Turn off the toggle switch next to "Switch Languages using Caps Lock".

There is no "Hardware Keyboard" option in my Settings/General/Keyboard.
