How can I mitigate Google Maps data usage on iPhone?

Basically the title. My primary phone is an iPhone 15 Pro.

I have a secondary iPhone XS Max (no cell service) that I use as a GPS while driving. Data supplied by the 15 Pro via hotspot.

Google Maps on iOS chews through data with no obvious settings to mitigate.

I only use the navigation going to/from work (~230 mile, 3.5 - 4 hour daily commute), and in 5 days it's plowed through 15gb hotspot data.

I'm not opposed to changing apps, but Google Maps is familiar so I wanted to see if anybody had any thoughts before I go learning something new.

Thanks in advance.

I don't understand these unhelpful answers. So what it's not an Apple app? It's still the most used navigation app in the world.

Here's a helpful answer:

Download your map to offline storage and Google Maps should use close to 0 bytes of data. 1. Click your profile picture on right top corner 2. Click "Offline maps" and choose the area you want

Unhelpful? Theres an old saying.........."You get more bees with honey." This is a user to user only forum. People volunteer their time to try to help other users. Suggesting an App is NOT an Apple app was appropriate if that's the post you think is unhelpful. Apple doesn't own Google, nor their app. Whether it is possibly the most used navigation app out there doesn't make a difference. If the app is consuming a lot of data, that's not something Apple has any control over. It's up to you to decide if the apps data usage is worth it to use it. If you have unlimited data it might not make a difference. If you have a metered data plan, it certainly could. Said simply, Apple has absolutely no control over an apps data usage if they don't own it.

KiltedTim did offer a useful suggestion. But please don't denigrate others for giving an honest answer, even if it wasn't the answer you were looking for.

You may just want to look into one of these... I'm not endorsing a specific one, this is just an example.

I got one for my daughter who has an older vehicle without CarPlay. Significantly bigger screen than your XS Max.

I personally use wireless CarPlay daily. For longer drives I have MagSafe charger in the center console. Since the phone screen isn't on at all, there's very little wear on the battery.

A good and valid observation :)

For one, I'm easily distracted, so the iPhone XS is stripped of almost all apps. And any that are still on it have notifications disabled. (Yes, I know car mode exists lol)

Two, it's a physically larger phone with a bigger screen for viewing. I'm not old by any stretch, but it's easier on the eyes all the same.

And three, I don't want to put my Pro through the physical battery abuse that's incurred by having the device plugged in, with the screen on (often at or near max brightness) on my dash, in the sun during the summer, or eating the heat from the front defroster during the winter. Again, ~4 hour daily commute. The battery abuse is one of the biggest reasons.
