can't restore iPhone from backup using latest Mac OS

I just got a replacement iPhone 13. I have my previous iPhone 12 backed up to my MBP. I can plug the new phone into the Mac and it comes up in the device list and offers me the option of restoring from backup. The phone also displays a "Connected" message. However, once I click to begin the restore process, I get a few seconds of the "Restoring" bar moving followed by Finder closing out the window and the phone displays a message asking for a computer connection. Any thoughts? Thanks

If the Mac and iPhone are seeing each other, that rules out the possibility of a "charging-only" cable where only the power pins are connected (not the data ones).

What versions of iOS are installed on each phone? If the iPhone 13 is running an older version, you'll need to update it before it will be able to make heads or tails out of a backup created with a newer version.

FYI, if you still have the old phone, another way of transferring data might be by using Quick Start.

If you still have the iPhone 12, and restoring from Mac does not work after trying Servant's suggestions, try backing up the iPhone 12 to iCloud (if you haven't already), and then restore to the 13 from there.
