Sorry but your iPhone 8 Plus cannot update to iOS 17. It can only go to iOS 16.7.11 and no further. You are right in that most modern apps these days require newer versions of iOS, why we don’t know. But this was the app developers choice and not Apple’s. It could be for compatibility issues, or they don’t want to support it as most users are on the latest software. I know one case with UPI payment apps that they require iOS 17 or later, that is because the NCPI wanted a feature to combat fraud and that was introduced in that iOS.

I think you meant to say that your iPhone 8 Plus cannot update to iOS 17.

If so, that is correct. The iPhone 8 Plus ran iOS 11 when Apple first introduced it in September 2017. It has gotten five major iOS updates, and can update to the latest release of iOS 16. But that's it. It will never run iOS 17, 18, 26, or higher.

This is a user-to-user forum, so it is very unlikely that Apple will see your plea "apple help fix this". But they would tell you the same thing – that iOS 17 and higher will never be coming to the iPhone 8 Plus.

FYI, here is a list of iPhones that

  • Are compatible with iOS 18 now, and
  • Will also be compatible with iOS 26 when it comes out this fall

I would suggest shopping for a recent phone – like a Phone 15- or 16-series phone – that is likely to have years of future updates ahead of it. Apple hasn't told us what the compatibility lists for iOS 27, 28, etc. will be, but it is not hard to guess that iOS 26 might be the last update the iPhone 11-series and SE (2nd generation) phones ever get. (Those phones originally shipped with iOS 13.*, and so, for them, iOS 26 represents their sixth major update.)
