How do I delete a contact from my Google account without removing it from my iPhone?

All of my contacts are created on my iPhone. I was unaware that Google has been synching my iPhone contacts with my Google account. I turned off Google Contacts on my iPhone Contacts Account, and all my iPhone contacts disappeared.

I was able to get the iPhone contacts back my turning on Google Contacts again. I also changed my iPhone Contacts default account to iCloud when it was set for Google.

Question: How do I delete a contact from my Google account without having Google delete it from my iPhone??

Correct. Refer to Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support, which describes how your contacts are stored — essentially, with an email account provider such as iCloud or (in your case) Google.

If all your contacts are stored with Google and you disable Google contacts then they will no longer appear in the Contacts app. If you want to export your Google contacts so that they can be used with iCloud, I found this Google support article which may be helpful: https://support.google.com/contacts/answer/7199294.

Once exported, import them into iCloud: Import, export, or print contacts on iCloud.com - Apple Support

There is no such thing as iPhone contacts. All contacts are synced with email accounts. As you have your gmail account installed your contacts are hosted by Google. If you have other email accounts (such as @icloud.com) you can also have contacts synced to it.

But probably the reason all of your contacts are Google is that is your Default Account for contacts. Go to Settings/Apps/Contacts, scroll to the bottom, and I think you will find that the Default Account is set to Google.

You can change it to some other email account, but that will not move any contacts to the new default account, it will only affect where new contacts are saved.

To see all of your accounts that host contacts, while still in Contact settings tap on Accounts. This will list all of your email accounts, and for each one it will say whether contacts sync with it.

It sounds like you created all of your contacts in Google Contacts. That's why they disappeared when you turned off Google Contacts / disconnected Google Contacts from your phone.

If you want to have those contacts on your phone, without using Google Contacts on your phone, you may need to export your contacts from Google Contacts and import them to a place on the iPhone other than Google Contacts.

Thank you for your response. I never allowed Google access to my Contacts. My iPhone Contacts default has always been sent to iCloud. I verified it again when I realized I was having a problem. When I create a new contact, I always do it on my iPhone.

I just learned that my husband was the one who allowed Google access to my contacts. He had used my Google account to send an email. He was not aware at the time what he had done, but he needed an email address, and when Google asked for permission to access my contacts, he clicked YES. Now all my contacts (including notes, personal info, etc.) are synched with Google.

It's as if Google is this parasite with my contacts, and I can't stop it. Although my iPhone Contacts default is set to iCloud, I intentionally changed information in an existing contact on my iPhone. Sure enough, it showed up in Google contacts.

Thanks. That explains it.
