apple tv no longer streams photos from network drive

Running tvOS 18.5 on an Apple TV, trying to (once again) stream photos from a network drive on the same wifi network. It worked for years, then stopped several months ago. Have reset router and Apple TV to no avail. All sharing toggles are on. I get the message “no libraries available."

Apple TV HD, tvOS 18

  • To get photos on Apple TV from a local drive (not iCloud), you can use Apple Home Sharing and the Computers app, or else a third party app (or client/server model). For Apple Home Sharing, Apple TV has to connect to a Mac or PC with Home Sharing active, regardless of where the photo files are; they have to be shared through the computer, even for a NAS. (Third party apps may be able to access a NAS directly.)
  • To get photos on Apple TV from iCloud (not a local drive), you may use the Photos app on Apple TV.

Apple Home Sharing requires that the sharing Library on the computer is set to an Apple Account for sharing. The Home Sharing settings on Apple TV should be set to the matching Apple Account, else it won’t find libraries.

The Library name on computers should be unique for your local home network. If you have multiple computers sharing their library, then each should have a different library name.

  1. What type and model computer has Home Sharing active?
  2. What is its version operating system?

MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.5. File sharing and media sharing are on. Apple TV and Mac are on the same wifi network and use the same Apple account. It worked great for years, then stopped working.

File Sharing is for computer-to-computer sharing through Finder network disks. It doesn’t need to be on for Home Sharing of media files. It is fine to leave it on, though, if you want. They’re independent.

Home Sharing settings may be delicate, in that they have been lost or broken somehow, in part or in whole, in your configuration, despite how the settings look at first sight. Try turning the settings off, then on again.

Photo sharing through Home Sharing has its own sub-settings in the Home Sharing settings. It can point to either the Photos library or a photos folder. Please set those settings again all over as well.

For testing the network connection, try if you can AirPlay or Mirror anything from the Mac to the Apple TV. That would use the same network compatibility as Home Sharing. If one works, then the other can too. If AirPlay doesn’t work, then you may need to re-examine the details for your home network.
