Weird Behavior from my Apple “Magic” Keyboard (Dropped Input)

Hi:

Weird behavior from my Apple wireless (“Magic”) keyboard that I hope someone can explain.

About 10% of the time when I attempt to enter a password, whether it is to login to my Mac, or to enter a password for an encrypted disk image on an external drive after I have logged in, it drops 2 letters (that is, if my PW is “abcde”, it enters “abde” if “c” is the dropped character)(by 2 letters, I mean that I’ve only seen this happen with 2 specific characters on the keyboard, but only one at a time )(interestingly, on one of the passwords that has both problematic characters in it, it is kind of random which of the 2 characters is impacted, sometimes it has been one, and sometimes the other, but never both at once). So far, without evaluating it systematically, it is only 2 of the keyboard characters that exhibit this behavior.

To login when this happens, I use Touch ID.

I can we what character is behaving funky by opening a text file immediately and type “abcde” and only see “abde” so I know that “c” is the problematic character. But then, I place the insertion cursor at the end of the text string and type the missing character and it appears normally; it seems that typing the problematic character the second time resets the software bug. At this point, when I type “abcde” one sees “abcde”.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

PS I haven’t tried substituting a wired keyboard when I am logging in; figured I’d wait to see what input folks had first.

Haven't seen this issue in a while (good news!), and I'm now up to Mac OS 15.5.

But I'm very curious about it.

I found a bunch of posts from people describing a similar issue.

My post and all the similar posts were "closed" with this message:

But I can't find an answer to the issue, and am also curious why Apple/System Moderator closed all these posts???

Thank you!

I sounds like an unreliable keyboard. But it could be something else.

You should update to the latest MacOS, 15.5.

Trying a different keyboard is the next thing I would do. If it's just that one keyboard, replace it. They do wear out or stop working eventually. I had a keyboard once that duplicated letters typed, sometimes.

Also try booting into safe mode. If the problem goes away, that means it is something you installed. Try Etrecheck and post its "anonymous" report here, it may reveal an incompatibility: Using EtreCheck - Apple Community

Try creating a new user, is the issue gone or does it persist? If it is gone, it means something in your setup or configuration for your primary user is causing this.

I doubt this is Apple software related; given the billions of users who do not see this. But it could be related to a user-installed extension or background app.
