How do I stop my iPhone from auto blocking saved hospital contacts?

I’m working as a doctor. On days that I’m on duty, the hospital will call me to see a patient when they are having a medical problem (usually emergency cases like cardiac arrest, or respiratory distress). Last week one of the nurses told me they can’t call me through my phone. Turns out my iPhone blocks ALL the HOSPITAL calls. So if the nurse use her personal phone, she could call me. But if she used ANY of the hospital phones (she tried with 8 different hospital number), she couldn’t reach me. I found out that my phone automatically blocked the hospital contacts (which were SAVED IN MY CONTACTS) and unblocked them. And then they get blocked again almost everyday! Every morning I have to check the “blocked number”, unblocks them, and then in the evening they are block again. This is dangerous because if there was an emergency case like cardiac arrest but the nurse couldn’t call me in time, the patient could die! Please help me fix this!

P.S. I do not have any third party app. I have also turned block unknown calls off. As I mentioned, the hospital numbers are saved in my contact, yet they were blocked!

Sharing an Apple ID, no matter how well you think you've managed it, tends to lead to unexpected consequences.

You don't need to be sharing contacts for blocking on one device to block them on all devices sharing the same Apple ID.

Stop sharing the Apple ID and I suspect the problem will be resolved.

And that's the problem. You should NEVER share an ID with ANYONE.

Until you stop sharing your ID with someone in your family, you're going to continue having issues. This isn't Apple's Fault. You need to follow the directions in the link posted above about how to Unshare an Apple ID.

Apple recommends against sharing an Apple Account.

That is very likely the central issue here.

Everything gets intermixed.

Stop sharing an Apple Account. Set up Family Sharing. Set up per-person accounts. Migrate the data.

I’ve worked with and supported a few folks that routinely made corrupting changes too, and then promptly forgot they made the changes. Witnessed one case. Watched them make a change. Then within five minutes, forget, and then deny anything was changed.

But in any event, stop sharing an Apple Account.

Your phone cannot choose a number to block on its own. It's simply NOT possible. But you can block numbers inadvertently yourself. You may have as KiltedTim suggests a focus set up, which could block the hospital number or you could have accidentally blocked the number. To check the numbers blocked on your iPhone, open the Settings App > Apps > Phone > Blocked Contacts and look for the hospital phone number. If it's there, you accidentally blocked that number and simply swiping from to left on the number and tapping Unblock, will remove the number from your blocked list.

to begin with, you need to stop sharing an Apple account. That WILL cause all kinds of problems.

Many settings will sync across devices when you're sharing an account, including focus settings and status.

DON'T do that.

Secondly, you don't seem to understand that you are NOT talking to Apple. This is a user forum. We are users just like you, not Apple employees. We can't change the way things behave.

So long as you are sharing an Apple account with someone troubleshooting is futile. You need to either give your mother her own Apple account or create a new one for yourself and make sure that all devices are using the correct account belonging to the individual who owns the device.

Also, whether you like it or not, you are incorrect that you don't share calls. Your phones may not ring when each of you receives a call. But if you check the call logs on your moms phone against your phone, you will see the call logs are merged and you can't change that. It is true you don't have to see each others texts, but you could very easily view your moms texts if you want and she can see yours if she wants. This too can't be changed when an Apple Account is shared.

It’s there on the “blocked number” list so I unblocked it but then it get blocked again MULTIPLE TIMES a day. Every morning I check to make sure I UNBLOCK every hospital number, but they are blocked again by the evening. I try to unblock when I notice, for example if there has been zero calls from the hospital for 2 hours, I know that’s weird so I check the “blocked numbers” and see the numbers there and unblock them and call the nurses back.

I turned all focus mode OFF

I turned “silence unknown calls” OFF

I have updated iOS

I tried restarting and even reset all network settings

Yes, I saved it in my contacts. Even when the hospital calls were blocked from reaching me, I could call them anytime from my contacts. The problem is that it might be too late for the patient to wait until I realize and call back. They need to be able to reach me immediately.

The “silence unknown callers” has always been OFF. It was never turned on so I didn’t have to turn it off.

This is not just some annoying issue, it’s serious. I do not want to be a rude customer to Apple but this is too much. I almost LOST A PATIENT today because of the delay. The nurse had to call my friend (who is also a doctor working in the same place, but she wasn’t on duty), and asked my friend to tell me the patient had dyspnea. I then ran to see the patient gasping for breath, his oxygen saturation was below 85%, he almost had a cardiac arrest if he was not intubated in time.

I’m willing to pay extra money for this. If buying a new phone will solve the problem, I would. But I’ve read some threads that say the block glitches follow with to back up to the new iPhone.
